Turbo Dodge Speedometer Pinion Gear Color and Tire Size Widget FAQ
This page provides information on the turbo Dodge speed sensors for cars built from 1984-1993. You can use this FAQ to determine which color speed sensor pinion gear you need to get your speedometer to read more accurately.
You can use the handy tire size widget below to determine the origional tire size for your car so that you can select more easily the correct color speedometer pinion gear for your application.
He we lists several wheel and tires sizes and indicate which speedometer pinion gear should be used for each. The gears are the same for all manual and automatic transaxles. The pinion gear is located on the speed/distance sensor shaft, which meshes with helical teeth on the right-side transmission output shaft. To replace the pinion gear, remove the 10mm bolt that holds the sensor, pull the sensor strait up, twisting it back and forth if necessary. Carefully spread the two plastic clips that hold the pinion gear to the bottom of the sensor and pull the gear off the end of the shaft. To put the new gear on, simply press it on. Each gear is a specific color, which corresponds to a specific number of teeth.
The larger the overall diameter of the tire, the fewer number of teeth are needed on the pinion gear. In other words, if your speedometer is reading too slow, you need fewer teeth. If your speedometer is reading too fast you need more teeth.
There is a genuine Mopar speed sensor that can be used in almost all turbo Dodge applications including cars with and without a speedometer cable. The Mopar piece includes all the needed adapter harness cables as well.
The Mopar Part number is: 0474088
There is also a Dorman part that fits the cars with no speedometer cable.
The Dorman part number for cars with no speedometer cable is: 917-631
The original factory speed sensor gears are no longer available but with the part numbers, you might be able to locate one using an Internet search
